Football Aficionados with the season in full swing and working on various projects fate brought me back to time-tested wisdom on talent evaluation.

Recently, I’ve been re-reading the important book by the late, well-respected San Francisco 49ers scouting director, Tony Razzano from 1981-1991. Secrets Of An NFL Scout is required reading to understand the player evaluation process. While the book was released in 1993 it provides solid and trusted insights from a professional who was partly responsible for building a dynasty which produced four Super Bowl championships during the 1980s. Tony’s son, Dave Razzano, is a Super Bowl-winning veteran scout.

Tony focused on five traits a draftable NFL prospect must have to help an organization. They are:

The most important one according to Tony? Competitiveness.

Consider this, guys: The NFL embodies the most fierce level of competition in football. Scouts are tasked with studying how competitive and driven players are at every given moment. That means practices, study sessions, workouts and games especially in ‘must-have’ moments to help their team win. Because the absolute bottom line of all of this is determining if that player can help his team win.
