During tough times, band together and focus on what you can control.

At the time of this post, we are in week 7 of the NFL season and week 8 of the college football season, respectively. It this age of unending opinions, it’s critical to block out noise in favor of must-needed signal. As I stated in this earlier post, adversity will hit. So how will you respond?

There are teams, coaches and players on the commonly referenced hot seat.

Yet there is still a lot of ball left to play. As things happen that go against us, what is our plan, what adjustments can we make, who can we count on? From from one week to the next, there can easily be a rollercoaster of emotions to handle. Coach Bill Parcells talks about waiting until Thanksgiving to see where a team really in in their season (more on that soon). But by having faith in who you are, in your plan and the people around you it will hopefully assist you in navigating the turbulence.

And yes, unfortunately, there are times things don’t work out. When that happens you try to keep your wits and finish the job as best you can. You note what’s going on, lessons you can take with you and how you can do things better the next time.

In the 2010s, I was the head football coach for a post graduate program for a season. While the intended purpose of it was good and we all tried to make it work for everyone it didn’t. Talk about Murphy’s Law and getting an up close explosion of bad attitudes and entitlement. That was one of the toughest experiences I ever faced in football or otherwise. But going through that I knew I wanted to do my best to finish the job. I had to get to late December and the end of the school semester. I wanted to finish then reset over the holiday and get back to work on doing things better the following year. For a number of reasons, that wasn’t possible. I decided to step down and pursue other opportunities. Things don’t always work out. You do the best you can in the given situation, learn from it and be thankful for the experience.

In closing, when things aren’t going well lean on your faith. He is above all and all glory goes to Him.
