Long Island University (NY) hosted Villanova University (PA) at their 2026 homecoming game.
Early in the 4th quarter, LIU hosting Villanova on Homecoming Day were down 13-6. That changed with an interception return for a touchdown by the Sharks which woke up the home crowd. They tied the game, but Villanova eventually scored the go ahead touchdown to seal a 20-16 win.
It was my first time out in Brookville, NY at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium (also known as Shark Stadium). A beautiful on-campus facility on a gorgeous pre-Fall day for some FCS action. Over 3,000 people were in attendance for the game. I, and my back, greatly appreciated the home team section with the seatbacks which is first-come, first-serve. I sat near a guy with a sweet pup wearing a cute shark fin outfit. Sorry no pic to share..
Homecoming started in the early-20th century. Which school began the tradition it is debatable. The day means several things, such as first home football game, welcoming veterans, school alumni and is characterized by a slate of events. Including brunches, luncheons, meet and greets, reunions, fundraising and other interactive on-campus activities. Of course, the alumni relations department will use the weekend as an opportune time to drive engagement and support. Many colleges now have adopted College Gameday-like shows on campus which invigorates the entire environment. While these initiatives may be planned at other times, it can make a stronger impression during football homecoming. The sport attracts a large percentage of the population, is a source of pride and never-ending passionate attention.
Sitting across from me was a gentleman in a suit. Not sure it he was alumni or faculty. But at a pivotal point in the game’s 4th quarter, he got up and went down to the front of the stands in hopes of pumping up the home crowd. Regardless of the final outcome, it was an admirable effort. And effort goes a long way in all of life’s pursuits.
May we always have that source of enthusiasm available to us when we need it. A football homecoming can amplify goodwill, relationships, open new doors, and energize the human spirit.
